With Somalia demanding Ethiopian troops leave its territory over a controversial port deal with Somaliland, the future of African Union peacekeeping in Somalia is now in doubt.
Ethiopia’s military has underpinned the fight against Al-Shabaab for nearly two decades, with 8,000-10,000 troops currently deployed to Somalia.
Around 3,000 are part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). The rest are deployed under bilateral agreements with Somalia’s government.
