Ethiopia’s government declared a cease-fire Wednesday in the embattled Tigray region in the north after a takeover of Tigray’s capital, Mekele, by regional forces.
After eight months of unflagging fire exchange between federal forces and regional forces, the Tigray Defense Force (TDF), locals in Mekele reported of seeing the once displaced TDF militants entering the hills surrounded capital.
African Global News said, leaders of the caretaker government put in place by the defiant Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, left the city immediately after a glorious takeover which attracted jubilation across the restive region.
Clashes between federal forces and TDF had escalated before and during the June 21 elections whose results are yet to be announced. The Abiy regime conducted no elections in Tigray region citing growing insecurities before and during the polling day.
Fighting in the restive northern region broke out late last year when the PM launched an offensive against TDF after gun attack accusations against the group.
