South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been arrested for questioning by anti-corruption investigators. The arrest, which occurred early on Wednesday, marks the first time in South Korea’s history that a sitting president has been detained.

According to reports, Yoon was seen leaving his official residence in a motorcade, accompanied by investigators.

The president is facing multiple investigations linked to his controversial martial law decree, with accusations including leading an insurrection, a charge that could carry life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Despite previous attempts to arrest him, Yoon had been protected by tight security at his residence. A standoff earlier this month had thwarted efforts to detain him, but this time, he was taken into custody.

After his arrest, Yoon issued a pre-recorded video message, calling the investigations “illegal” and stating, “The law is all broken in this country.”

He further emphasized that his actions were meant to prevent bloodshed, not acknowledge the investigations. Investigators now have 48 hours to hold him before applying for an extension to his detention.
