A Nigerian man living in the UK recently ended his engagement after being presented with a bride price list totaling N3.5 million. The list included items such as drinks, livestock, clothing, and cash gifts for extended family members. Despite his commitment to the woman, including plans to support her education abroad, he was disheartened when she supported her family’s financial demands, citing Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Princess Adeola, who shared the story, wrote, “His pain wasn’t just the list itself but the fact that the woman he loves supports her family’s demands, claiming everything is expensive in Nigeria.” The man, who described the demands as akin to “selling a child,” ultimately decided to move on, saying, “I’ll cry, heal, and move on with my life.” This incident highlights the tension between traditional practices and modern financial realities in relationships.
In my view, while cultural practices are deeply rooted and important, it is crucial for families to consider the financial realities that couples face today. A balance between tradition and practicality is key to fostering healthier, more sustainable relationships.
