The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has condemned the death of 40-year-old Benjamin Okoli in police custody, following the recent death of 50-year-old Jeremiah Okoye on January 13, 2025.
NICASA President-General, Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, called the deaths “unbearable,” stating that Okoli was stopped, searched, and taken to his house with his brother.
Despite finding nothing incriminating, the two were allegedly tortured. Okoli fell into a coma, and “the police stood by and watched as Okoli’s life slipped away,” Onyekwelu said. Paramedics later declared him dead.
NICASA also expressed concern that Okoli’s death occurred during the investigation into Okoye’s death, allegedly by the same police unit. “Now, two Nigerians have died in police custody in less than a month,” Onyekwelu stated.
NICASA leaders in Limpopo Province are calling for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to hold the responsible officers accountable.
They have informed Nigerian diplomatic missions and are seeking intervention to prevent further deaths.
“We appeal to our nationals to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue their daily activities peacefully,” Onyekwelu added.
