James Melvin Ejeh, the Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State, has issued a 48-hour deadline for Fulani herdsmen to vacate farmlands in the area.

This announcement was made during a stakeholders’ meeting on April 26, 2025, at the Agatu LGA council secretariat in Obagaji, as reported by Daily Post.

The meeting, which included traditional rulers, Fulani community leaders, youth representatives, and security officials, was convened to address rising concerns over the impact of herders’ activities on farmlands as the planting season nears.

During the meeting, Ejeh stressed the importance of uninterrupted farming, stating, “Our farmers must cultivate without disruption. We will do everything necessary to create a safe environment for them.”

He highlighted the central role that agriculture plays in the local economy and the necessity for farmers to have full access to their land without obstruction from livestock.

Though peace has largely prevailed in the area, Ejeh warned that any delays in relocating the herders could jeopardize the planting season, a critical time for local food production.

The Ado of the Fulani requested an additional week to facilitate the relocation, a request that was granted by the council.

The General Youth Chairman of Agatu, Mr. Oloche Silas, assured the meeting that the local youth would support the peaceful relocation and refrain from any violent actions.

Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), also attended the meeting and pledged their commitment to ensuring safety during the relocation process.
