Early Sunday morning, the Congolese army thwarted a coup attempt in Kinshasa, arresting several perpetrators, including foreigners, after a shootout with guards of a local politician, Vital Kamerhe, which left three dead.

The clash occurred near the presidential palace. Kamerhe and his family are safe, and their security has been reinforced. The coup attempt follows a crisis within President Felix Tshisekedi’s ruling party over a postponed parliamentary leadership election. Reports indicate the attackers were linked to a wealthy US-based Congolese national and were ill-equipped, resulting in a swift neutralization by the military.
