Tropical Cyclone Dikeledi has tragically claimed five lives in the northern province of Nampula, Mozambique. The National Disaster Management Institute (INGD) reported that the victims died when their homes collapsed due to the storm.
Dikeledi’s destructive path also wiped out 73 classrooms at 35 schools, and damaged 6,089 homes, with 2,903 homes completely destroyed.
INGD chairperson Luísa Meque stated, “The cyclone caused extensive damage, leaving thousands without shelter.”
After passing through Mozambique, Dikeledi moved eastward into the Indian Ocean, posing a reduced threat to the region. This storm follows Cyclone Chido, which also caused significant devastation just a month earlier.
The tragic losses and damage underscore the severe impact of these tropical cyclones on vulnerable communities in southern Africa.
