DR CONGO: Nine die in South Kivu gun attack

Insecurity engulfed Bukavu city in the eastern region of Democratic Republic of Congo following a Wednesday morning deadly attack by unidentified gunmen.

Residents spoken to report of hearing gunshots as everyone remained indoors for several hours after dawn.

South Kivu governor, Theo Kasi confirmed the development saying nine people including six armed attackers, two soldiers and a policeman died during an operation to restore peace in Bukavu.

In the same vein, authorities say 36 suspected attackers have been arrested as the investigation continues within the city that slowly returning to normal.

The mineral-rich eastern Congo remains vulnerable to armed violence despite the September 2020 ceasefire agreement between the government and leaders of 70 armed groups.

The fruitless ceasefire agreement sought among things to integrate armed groups into the national army on.
