Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Aby Ahmed has refuted claims of having peace talks with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) about the crisis rampant in the country’s northern region.

PM Ahmed was reacting to TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael’s last Tuesday claims that the two warring parties were engaging in positive talks to end the crisis.

Speaking in his first parliamentary address since winning the second term in office in October, Abiy said, “I hear a lot about talks, but there have been no talks so far. However, because we have said we have not talked does not mean there will be no talk at all.”

Since November 2020, there has been a conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, which has killed over 14,000 civilians and displaced several thousands.

Tigrayans are currently grappling with a worsening humanitarian crisis, without access to health services and education facilities.
