Ethiopia and Somalia have pledged to advance their “common interests” through enhanced diplomatic and economic collaboration.

Following discussions between Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu, the two nations issued a joint statement on February 27, 2025, focusing on boosting security, trade, and bilateral ties.

The visit by Prime Minister Abiy marked a significant step in the ongoing normalization of relations, a process which began with the “Ankara Declaration” in December.

This agreement, facilitated by Turkey, helped ease tensions following Ethiopia’s port deal with the disputed region of Somaliland.

The leaders expressed their shared determination to work together in fostering peace, security, and a strengthened relationship. They also affirmed their commitment to the technical discussions initiated in Ankara earlier this month, aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.

Despite reports of mortar fire near Mogadishu’s airport ahead of the meeting, there were no casualties reported. This development follows the announcement that both countries will restore full diplomatic representation in their capitals.
