Richard “Rick” Slayman, aged 62, who made history as the inaugural recipient of a genetically edited pig kidney transplant, has passed away two months post-surgery, as reported by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and confirmed by his family.

Despite the tragic loss, the hospital emphasized that Slayman’s demise was not directly linked to the transplant. Slayman’s courageous leap into xenotransplantation, driven by his battle against Type 2 diabetes and hypertension, symbolized hope for countless patients awaiting organ transplants worldwide.

His legacy of bravery and optimism continues to inspire patients, researchers, and healthcare professionals alike, marking a significant chapter in the evolving field of xenotransplantation.
