A three-storey building in the Umumbi Autonomous Community, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, collapsed on Friday afternoon, trapping five construction workers.
Three carpenters working on the roof survived, while two of the trapped workers are reportedly brothers who had just started working at the site. The building’s owner is abroad, and his siblings are supervising the project.
According to Engr. Chinedu Okwara, the collapse likely resulted from substandard materials and the absence of a certified building engineer. Ukwa West Local Government Area Chairman, Newman Azu, confirmed the incident and stated that rescue efforts are underway.
