Nikki Haley achieved a significant feat in the 2024 Republican presidential campaign by defeating Donald Trump in the primary in Washington DC.
Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina, Haley’s victory marks the first time a woman has won a Republican primary in US history. Although Trump maintains a substantial lead over Haley, her win in Washington DC, though symbolic due to its Democratic-leaning nature, grants her 19 Republican delegates, adding to her nationwide count of 43 delegates.
Trump remains the frontrunner, but Haley’s triumph signals a shift among some Republicans away from Trump’s leadership style.
