Former UPC Member Cecilia Anyakuit to Challenge Vice President Alupo in NRM Primaries

Katakwi, Uganda | Cecilia Anyakuit, a former Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) member and newly elected NRM Treasurer for Katakwi, has officially joined the race to unseat Vice President Retired Major Jessica Alupo as Katakwi District Woman Member of Parliament in the upcoming NRM primaries.

Anyakuit picked her nomination forms from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission, chaired by Dr. Tanga Odoi. She described her campaign as “people-driven” and rooted in addressing the unmet needs of the ordinary citizens of Katakwi, particularly the youth, women, and vulnerable communities.

Citing issues such as ignored compensation claims and unequal access to government services, Anyakuit criticized the current leadership for favoring the well-off while leaving the poor behind. She questioned the value Katakwi has gained from producing a Vice President, noting that the district has not seen meaningful development in return.

“I am an alternative voice, new blood, and a solution provider,” she stated, adding that she had resisted attempts to be bought out of the race and warned of possible intimidation from security forces.

Anyakuit, who is also Chairperson of the Technical Committee at the National Council of Sports and a former manager of Uganda’s national netball team, the She Cranes, pledged to stay committed to the people’s cause.

Her candidacy sets the stage for a high-profile contest within the ruling party, challenging the political stronghold of Vice President Alupo in her home district.

Also picking nomination forms on Thursday were Busiki County MP Paul Akamba and Engineer Oidu Kizito Franklin from Tororo County South, both of whom outlined development-focused agendas for their constituencies.
