In the second day of hearings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Israel initiated its defense Friday, against accusations of genocide, strongly rejecting the case presented by South Africa.
The defense team stated that Israel’s actions were not aimed at the destruction of the Palestinian people but rather focused on protecting them in the ongoing conflict with Hamas, widely recognized as a terrorist organization by many countries.
Israel’s argument held that its military actions were part of a larger effort to combat Hamas, which it viewed as a threat to its security.
Without doubt, the defense aimed to counter the accusations of genocide by emphasizing the intent to safeguard rather than annihilate the Palestinian population.
Meanwhile, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza, in a social media statement, reported a toll of 22,835 deaths since October 7 of the previous year.
Notably, the ministry does not distinguish between civilian and combatant casualties in its tally.
The proceedings at the International Court of Justice will play a crucial role in shaping the narrative surrounding Israel’s military actions and the broader geopolitical implications of the conflict.
