Kenya’s impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced on Sunday that his security detail has been withdrawn, asserting that President William Ruto would be accountable if anything were to happen to him.
Gachagua described this development as “the most unfortunate thing” for a person who supported Ruto’s presidential campaign, dismissing the impeachment charges against him as politically motivated. He emphasized, “My safety is at risk,” highlighting the urgency of his situation.
Despite his impeachment on multiple charges, including gross constitutional violations, Gachagua is contesting the decision legally, stating that he does not view the dismissal as final. Following his impeachment, Parliament appointed Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki as his replacement, but a court has temporarily halted Kindiki’s swearing-in pending Gachagua’s legal challenges. Ruto has not publicly commented on the impeachment.
