Kenya Moves Closer to Protecting Migrant Workers with New Welfare Fund
Kenya is taking major steps to protect its citizens working abroad through the development of the Migrant Workers Welfare Fund.

During a consultative workshop held in June 2025, government officials, labour partners, and other stakeholders met to refine how the fund will operate.
The goal is to create a structured support system that safeguards the rights and welfare of Kenyan migrant workers while ensuring transparency and long-term sustainability.
At the workshop, participants agreed on a hybrid financing model where contributions would come from migrant workers, recruitment agencies, and the government.
They emphasised that workers’ contributions must remain voluntary, affordable, and clearly explained so people understand the benefits.
Experts also agreed on key regulations for the fund and added input from Kenyan workers who have returned home, helping shape a system that reflects real needs and experiences.
This progress signals Kenya’s commitment to building a strong and reliable welfare mechanism for its migrant workforce.
Once completed, the Migrant Workers Welfare Fund is expected to offer better protection, improved support services, and a safety net for Kenyans working in different parts of the world.
