Hon. Mojisola Meranda is set to step down from her position as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly and return to her previous role as Deputy Speaker. This shift follows a leadership crisis in the Assembly.

A meeting of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) is scheduled for Monday to select a new Speaker from Lagos West Senatorial District. According to reports, “the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership was not in favour” of Meranda’s appointment as Speaker, which led to her decision to step down.

The removal of Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, who had been accused of fraud and high-handedness, is now considered final, with the focus shifting to selecting a new Speaker.

“There are currently eight experienced lawmakers from the district being considered for the position,” with notable contenders including Hon. Setonji David and Hon. Kehinde Joseph. The GAC’s decision will be crucial in resolving the ongoing leadership dispute in the Assembly.
