Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera urged local farmers Tuesday to shift from subsistence to commercial farming as a way of maximizing their gains.

Speaking at Namadidi ground in Zomba during a development rally covered by MBC, Chakwera said: “Malawi has the potential to move from an importing country to an exporting one. Let me also highlight the need to conserve the environment to mitigate the effects of climate change.”

Speaking earlier during a crop inspection tour in Aaron, Mjojo and Kaunde 1 villages of Zomba district, the President called for a multi-sectoral approach to farming for farmers to have access the country’s Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP).

The soft spoken Chakwera observed that farmers with access to the AIP were doing better.

Meanwhile, President Chakwera called on farmers to consider using modern farming practices for enhanced profitability which is a prerequisite for food security at both the household and national levels.
