In the wake of a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has appointed Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as the acting president.

The accident, which occurred in East Azerbaijan province, also killed all nine people on board, including a provincial governor.

The Supreme Leader has announced five days of national mourning. New presidential elections are scheduled within 50 days, in accordance with the Iranian constitution.
