Niger’s military government has banned exports of rice, cereals, and legumes to countries outside the Alliance of Sahel States (ASS) to protect local supplies. Junta chief Abdourahamane Tiani stated the measure is to ensure access to “goods of mass consumption” amid rising food inflation, which has hit staple items particularly hard.

The ban exempts Mali and Burkina Faso, which are also governed by military leaders. Violators face severe penalties, including the seizure of shipments and criminal charges. Despite sanctions from ECOWAS being lifted in February, disruptions continue due to border closures and supply chain issues.

The agriculture ministry is also planning to purchase part of farmers’ harvests to bolster emergency reserves and ensure food security, even as the nation grapples with the aftermath of recent flooding.
