In a landmark decision, the Abia State House of Assembly has abolished the payment of pensions to former governors and their deputies in the state.
Sponsored by Majority Leader Okoro Uchenna Kalu, the bill titled “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024” received unanimous support during Tuesday’s plenary session. Effective immediately, this move aims to curtail the exorbitant cost of governance and redirect resources towards state development.
Notably, former governors including Okezie Ikpeazu, Theodore Orji, and Orji Uzor Kalu, along with their deputies, will no longer receive pensions and other entitlements. This decision aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s agenda to streamline governance expenditure, as emphasized by Kalu.
