Measures include suspending import duties and taxes on maize, rice, wheat, and cowpeas for 150 days, importing 250,000 metric tons of wheat and maize, and supporting small-scale processors and farmers. The government will also set a Guaranteed Minimum Price, restock the National Strategic Food Reserve, and boost agricultural production.
Additional initiatives involve promoting greenhouse cultivation, collaborating with the Nigerian Military for arable land development, and establishing a Ministry of Livestock Development. The success of these measures hinges on stakeholder cooperation. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, emphasized the government’s commitment to food security and ensuring no Nigerian goes to bed hungry.
