Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s newly elected President John Dramani Mahama following his victory in the December 7 general election. Tinubu, in a telephone conversation with Mahama, praised the peaceful nature of the election and commended Ghanaians for upholding democratic values.
A statement from Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, highlighted Tinubu’s hope that Mahama’s return to power would foster greater stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Tinubu also expressed appreciation for Mahama’s leadership and the peaceful conduct of both the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.
Tinubu acknowledged that Ghana had once again shown the world that democracy is the best path to achieving political stability, economic growth, and transparent governance in Africa. He emphasized that Nigeria and the region remain committed to the principle that people should have the freedom to choose their leaders.
Moreover, Tinubu praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and candidate of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP), for conceding defeat gracefully even before the official results were announced, further reinforcing Ghana’s democratic values.
President Tinubu’s remarks reinforce the importance of democratic processes, not only in Ghana but across the African continent. The peaceful transition of power is vital for the progress of any nation, and it is encouraging to see leaders such as Mahama and Bawumia setting an example of respect for democratic ideals. The ability of citizens to freely choose their leaders should always be protected, as it ensures political stability and progress.
