Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, strongly criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government for demolishing properties belonging to Nigerians in Lagos State amidst the country’s ongoing hardship.

He particularly condemned the reported demolitions allegedly targeting markets and buildings owned by the Igbo community in Lagos, including the case of former Super Eagles striker, Emmanuel Emenike.Expressing dismay and unhappiness, Obi highlighted the irresponsibility of both state and federal governments in carrying out these demolitions on properties of poor Nigerians while poverty is escalating. He emphasized that in the current economic harshness, governments should focus on implementing measures to alleviate hardship and lift more people out of poverty instead of exacerbating their struggles.

Obi stressed the need for a responsive government to consider the dire economic conditions and prioritize alleviating citizens’ hardships rather than undertaking exercises that further burden the already struggling populace. He pointed out that these demolished properties often represent the life savings and retirement homes of the elderly and incapacitated, exacerbating their financial stress. His appeal was directed towards governments involved in these actions, urging them to show compassion and take into account the prevailing hardships in the country while enforcing regulations. Obi emphasized the necessity for government actions to exhibit empathy and a human touch while ensuring sensible regulations are enforced.
