Tensions in Liberia are escalating as the country approaches its upcoming presidential elections, with a troubling outbreak of violence reported over the weekend.

Three individuals tragically lost their lives in clashes between supporters of the two major political parties: the Unity Party, led by former Vice President Joseph Boakai, and the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), headed by President George Weah.

According to local tabloids, the violence unfolded in the northwestern Lofa county, prompting both the United Nations (UN) and the West African regional bloc, ECOWAS, to call for restraint and an end to hostilities. The situation has raised concerns about the stability of the nation in the run-up to the elections.

The clashes between supporters of these political factions underscore the deep-seated divisions and rivalries that have persisted in Liberia’s political landscape.

As the country prepares for the pivotal presidential elections, the international community is closely monitoring developments to ensure a peaceful and democratic transition of power.

The UN and ECOWAS have made a joint appeal to the leaders of both parties, urging them to take immediate steps to quell the violence and encourage their followers to refrain from provocations or any form of violent actions. The outcome of these efforts will play a crucial role in determining the atmosphere leading up to the elections and the overall stability of Liberia.
