The US government conducted its first anti-al-shabab airstrike under the Joe Biden administration on Tuesday in Somalia’s northern region of Galkayo.
Yesterday’s airstrike came seven months after President Biden took over from former President Donald Trump.
According to a statement by Defense Department Spokeswoman Cindi King, the US had been backing Somali army throughout its fight against the Islamic militants.
King added that the airstrike had injured no civilians though authorities were still assessing the damage at press time.
Under the Biden, the US has reduced the use of drone strikes as compared to the Trump administration that had increased airstrikes in Somalia.
The Somali army has been fighting al-Shabab militants which control much of the country’s southern and central regions.
