South Sudan’s government said Sunday that the worst flooding the country saw in the last three months has killed at least 100 people, leaving several thousands internally displaced.
The country’s Humanitarian Minister, Peter Mayen Majongdit, said hundreds of families were living on water-surrounded islands under extremely bad conditions marked by starvation, lack of access to medical care including schools.
According to the minister, recorded deaths were caused by flooding and associated waterborne diseases.
While doubling efforts to move over a million affected families to higher grounds, the government is facing economic challenges exacerbated by the Coronavirus pandemic.
