Sudan’s de facto leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, is reportedly set to depart for Saudi Arabia or Egypt today, August 28, 2023, as part of a regional tour to seek an end to the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, according to reliable sources cited by Radio Dabanga.
This marks the first time in 130 days that al-Burhan has left the army headquarters in Khartoum since the outbreak of the conflict. After visiting the Sedna base in Omdurman, the general proceeded through Atbara to reach Port Sudan.
In recent developments, violence escalated last week, resulting in casualties around the El Shajara military base in west Khartoum on August 23, 2023. Furthermore, on Sunday, August 27, 2023, reports emerged of bombings and clashes in both Khartoum North and Omdurman.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Army and their military rivals, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023, has led to the displacement of millions of individuals. Many have sought refuge across borders to escape the dire situation.
Human Rights Watch has grimly documented the renewed conflict, detailing instances of violence, rape, and starvation.
