Tanzania has imposed a ban on the importation of agricultural products from South Africa and Malawi in retaliation for similar trade restrictions imposed by both countries on Tanzanian goods.
The dispute, which involves key commodities like maize flour, rice, and bananas, has led to rising tensions within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Tanzania’s Agriculture Minister, Hussein Bashe, announced the decision, stating, “I would like to officially announce that from this night… we won’t allow any agricultural products from South Africa in our country,” adding that a similar ban would also be applied to Malawi.
This move came after both countries failed to meet a deadline set by Tanzania to lift their bans on Tanzanian imports by Wednesday.
Malawi had recently banned the import of Tanzanian agricultural goods, including maize flour, rice, ginger, and bananas. South Africa had also restricted the import of Tanzanian bananas.
Minister Bashe stressed that these actions were necessary to protect local businesses, saying, “We are taking this measure to protect our business. This is business, and we should all respect each other.”
In addition to halting imports, Tanzania will now prohibit the transit of agricultural goods through its territory destined for Malawi.
The government will also suspend the export of Tanzanian fertilizer to Malawi.
Despite the escalated measures, Bashe emphasized that talks would continue with both countries in a bid to resolve the impasse.
