Tanzania has denied reports of a “ban” on its national airline, Air Tanzania, following its recent inclusion on the EU’s Air Safety List. The EU’s decision, citing safety concerns identified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), urged Air Tanzania to resolve these issues.

However, Tanzania’s government spokesperson, Genson Msigwa, clarified that Air Tanzania was never flying in EU airspace to begin with, and the situation should not be viewed as a ban. Tanzania is actively working with European authorities to gain clearance for potential future flights. This controversy highlights the ongoing challenges many African airlines face regarding safety oversight in the EU.

In my view, while the technicalities of the issue are significant, the broader context reveals a challenge for African carriers in breaking into the competitive European aviation market. The situation points to deeper concerns about the alignment of safety standards between continents.
