John F. Kennedy offered an insightful view about history when he said “it is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing into the future. To try to hold fast to a part of it is to be swept aside.”

No doubt, history’s dynamic and unstoppable nature is central to that idea but the takeaway is that history is a continuous flow, constantly shaping our present and future.
Again, any attempt to cling to past events or traditions can be futile, as history’s momentum will inevitably carry us forward.

On this day in 1492, the Ensisheim meteorite, the oldest meteorite with a known date of impact, struck the Earth in a wheat field outside the village of Ensisheim, Alsace, France.

On this day in 1504, Christopher Columbus returned from his fourth and last voyage.

Still on this day in 1910, the first air freight shipment (from Dayton, Ohio, to Columbus, Ohio) was undertaken by the Wright brothers and department store owner Max Morehouse.

Again, it was on this day in 1956, Suez Crisis: The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for the United Kingdom, France and Israel to immediately withdraw their troops from Egypt.

According to Today in History, on this day in 1987, in Tunisia, president Habib Bourguiba was overthrown and replaced by Prime Minister Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Regrettably on this day in 1991, Magic Johnson announces that he is HIV-positive and retires from the NBA.

It was on this day in 2020 that Joe Biden is confirmed elected as the 46th president of the United States, defeating incumbent Donald Trump.

Today in history will never forget Jesús García Corona (13 November 1881 – 7 November 1907). He was a Mexican railroad brakeman who died while preventing a train loaded with dynamite from exploding near Nacozari, Sonora, in 1907. As “el héroe de Nacozari”, he is revered as a national hero and many streets, plazas, and schools across Mexico are named after him.

Today is Modibo Sidibé’s birthday, the Sudanese–Malian police officer and politician, Prime Minister of Mali. He was born in the year of our Lord, 1988.
