The United States will deploy additional warships and fighter jets to the Middle East to defend Israel against potential attacks from Iran and its proxies, the Pentagon announced. This move comes amid heightened tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and a key Hezbollah commander in Lebanon.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin signed orders late Friday to send the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to the Middle East, along with naval cruisers and destroyers equipped with ballistic missile defense systems.
Additionally, an extra fighter squadron will be dispatched to the region, and preparations are underway to deploy land-based missile defense capabilities.
These deployments aim to bolster American defenses and support Israel as both nations brace for possible military strikes by Iran.
Tehran and its proxies have vowed revenge for the recent killings of their top leaders.
