President Hakainde Hichilema’s dramatic move to dissolve Zambia’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Board amid allegations of corruption calls for critical examination of both the challenges and potential breakthroughs in the country’s fight against graft.

His decision to disband the ACC Board speaks to a profound shift in Zambia’s approach to tackling corruption. Unlike previous administrations, notably the Patriotic Front (PF) under Edgar Lungu, Hichilema’s government has demonstrated a willingness to confront corrupt practices head-on. The PF era was marked by a troubling trend: allegations of corruption were often met with inaction and intimidation. Ministers and officials accused of corruption were shielded from accountability, and their court appearances were frequently accompanied by acts of intimidation that stifled justice.

Hichilema’s administration, in contrast, has taken significant steps to clean the house. The president’s decision to fire the ACC Board members, including the embattled Director General Thom Shamakamba, reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability that had been notably absent before. Despite criticism from the PF, who accuse Hichilema of failing to address corruption effectively, this decisive action signals a departure from the status quo of complacency.

Yet, this move is not without its complexities. The dissolution of the ACC Board, while bold, raises questions about the effectiveness of Zambia’s anti-corruption framework. The call for a thorough investigation into the former ACC Director General’s alleged misconduct is a crucial next step. Zambians are watching closely to ensure that this action leads to genuine reform rather than a mere reshuffling of the deck.

The real test for Hichilema’s administration will be its ability to sustain this momentum. In a country where political patronage and corruption have long been entrenched, dismantling these structures requires more than symbolic gestures. It demands a systemic overhaul and a steadfast commitment to enforcing the rule of law.

Hichilema’s willingness to take bold actions should be seen as a positive development in Zambia’s ongoing battle against corruption. However, the true measure of his administration’s success will be the tangible results of these efforts.

Overall, while challenges remain, President Hichilema’s actions reflect a significant and hopeful shift towards genuine reform. The journey towards a corruption-free Zambia is fraught with obstacles, but the commitment to fight corruption without fear is a crucial step in reclaiming the nation’s integrity and restoring public trust.
