African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat has strongly criticized Israel’s military movement into Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip, denouncing it as a violation of international law.
Rafah serves as a vital humanitarian corridor for aid entering through Egypt and is home to over 1 million displaced Palestinians.
In a statement issued by the AU, Chairman Mahamat expressed grave concern over Israel’s actions in Rafah, emphasizing the need to respect international norms and the rights of civilians in conflict zones.
The incursion into Rafah has raised alarms within the international community, with calls for immediate de-escalation and adherence to international humanitarian law.
Simultaneously, the United States has intervened by halting a planned shipment of bombs to Israel.
A senior US official disclosed that the decision was made due to concerns that the bombs could potentially be utilized in offensive operations targeting Rafah.
The move reflects growing international scrutiny over Israel’s military actions.
The developments in Rafah have heightened tensions in the region and underline the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the longstanding Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The AU and other international bodies continue to closely monitor the situation, urging all parties to exercise restraint and work towards a sustainable ceasefire agreement.
