Nairobi, May 9, 2024 – Kenya’s healthcare system received a much-needed reprieve yesterday as doctors, represented by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU), reached a return-to-work agreement with the government, effectively ending a debilitating 55-day strike.

Stakeholders have hailed the agreement as a breakthrough, comes after prolonged negotiations between the union and government officials.

Health Minister Susan Nakhumicha Wafula, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, and Labour Minister Florence Bore were among the signatories to the deal, which was finalized on May 8, 2024.

According to sources cited by DW, the signing of the agreement marks the resolution of a protracted standoff that had paralyzed Kenya’s healthcare sector since March 12.

The nationwide strike, initiated by at least 7,000 medical professionals, primarily focused on demands for increased salaries and improved working conditions.

DW reported that the strike’s impact was keenly felt across the country, with hospitals and clinics grappling with reduced staffing levels and limited access to essential medical services.

Under the terms of the return-to-work agreement, both parties have committed to addressing the concerns raised by the medical professionals.

The agreement outlines measures to enhance doctors’ remuneration and address systemic issues affecting the healthcare sector. Additionally, provisions have been made to ensure the timely disbursement of salaries and allowances to medical personnel.

The resolution of the strike has been welcomed by stakeholders and the general public, who had expressed growing concerns over the prolonged disruption of healthcare services.

With the signing of the return-to-work agreement, hopes are high for the restoration of normalcy in Kenya’s healthcare facilities and the delivery of quality medical services to the population.

As Kenya’s healthcare system gradually recovers from the impact of the strike, attention now turns to implementing the provisions of the agreement and fostering a conducive working environment for medical professionals.
