In the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo, children are increasingly becoming victims of violence, with reports of lethal shootings, rapes, and abductions.
Suzanne Amisi Wilonja’s 10-year-old son, Sylvain, was shot in the head by retreating soldiers in January as they looted her home. Tragically, Sylvain died before he could reach medical help.
United Nations reports have highlighted an alarming rise in child recruitment, killings, and sexual violence as M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, seize more territory.
The violence has also led to a significant increase in rape cases, particularly affecting women and children. In Goma, over 170 children were among the 572 reported rape cases in just one week.
The rise in sexual violence, including gang rapes, has deeply affected the region, with survivors enduring severe injuries. The UN Refugee Agency reports children dying from exhaustion while fleeing the fighting, highlighting their vulnerability in the conflict.
Despite the escalating violence, M23 rebels claim their mission is to restore order and security in the region. However, for families like Emile Bashali’s, who lost his baby sister in a bombing, this offer of “order” comes too late.
