Human rights advocate and former presidential hopeful, Omoyele Sowore, along with his family, emerged unscathed from a magnitude 4.8 earthquake that struck New York City and its environs, including New Jersey, early Friday.

Sowore confirmed the ordeal via Twitter, stating, “Just experienced an Earthquake in New Jersey!” The quake’s epicenter was pinpointed just northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, by the United States Geological Survey. Despite causing minor tremors felt from Philadelphia to New York and along the coast, there have been no reports of significant damage.

The quake briefly interrupted a UN Security Council meeting on Gaza in New York. Sowore’s fortunate survival contrasts with recent natural disasters, such as the 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan, underscoring the unpredictable nature of global seismic activity.
