President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal has taken decisive action by annulling a decree that appointed members to the Supreme Court. This move effectively dismisses the newly promoted 1st President of the Court, Abdoulaye Ndiaye, and marks the beginning of significant changes under the new regime.

The decision comes shortly after the previous president, Macky Sall, made last-minute appointments to the Supreme Court on March 29, 2024, just days before the end of his term. Among the appointments were promotions and new appointments, setting the stage for potential controversy.

Of particular concern were the rulings made by the 1st Supreme Court president, which were deemed controversial, especially those affecting the eligibility of the new Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, as a candidate.

President Faye’s decision to annul these appointments reflects his commitment to addressing perceived injustices and ensuring transparency and fairness within the judiciary.

This move marks President Faye’s first major action since assuming office, signaling a departure from the policies of his predecessor and setting the tone for his administration’s approach to governance and judicial reform.
