The migration agency of the UN has called for an urgent “rapid expansion” of humanitarian aid and increased funding for operations in Mozambique’s war torn Cabo Delgado province.
Speaking during a visit to Metuge District, International Organization for Migration (IOM) director, António Vitorino, said additional funding was needed to cover life-saving humanitarian needs for several thousands of Mozambicans that have been internally displaced due to insurgency violence.
“Significant additional funding is needed to cover life-saving humanitarian needs and work towards lasting solutions, especially before the next rainy and cyclone season in December,” he said.
The IOM head was in Metuge District to appreciate the challenges authorities were facing while keeping 125,000 out of 800,000 internally displaced people.
Between January and July of this year, the IOM had provided shelter construction, reconstruction support and household items to more than 600,000 Cabo Delgado residents though agency says its operations are underfunded.
The northern region of Mozambique has been under arms violence perpetuated by militias for four years now.
