Fela Durotoye, former presidential candidate of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), disclosed that he served as Senior Special Assistant on National Values and Social Justice under President Bola Tinubu for six months without receiving any salary.
In an opinion piece, Durotoye defended the administration amidst criticism about appointments during Nigeria’s ongoing economic difficulties. He clarified that when he accepted the position, he made it clear that he would not take a salary, viewing his work as a form of national service.
Durotoye’s statement came in response to ongoing critiques following the recent appointment of Daniel Bwala as Special Adviser. The politician emphasized, “I expressed my desire to NOT receive a salary, as I considered this to be my service to my nation.”
Fela Durotoye’s decision to serve without pay reflects personal sacrifice, but such decisions also raise questions about the broader financial structures and priorities within the government, especially amidst Nigeria’s challenging economic situation.
