The former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi called upon the judiciary to protect democracy and the rule of law in Nigeria. He made this plea on X (formerly Twitter) after the Supreme Court reserved judgment on appeals by him and the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging the tribunal’s decision affirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election. Obi expressed concerns about identity crises and controversies surrounding Nigeria’s leadership since the 2023 presidential elections, emphasizing that titles and positions in power must be backed by integrity and credibility. He stressed the judiciary’s responsibility to uphold the integrity of titles through transparent judgements, protect against identity fraud, and safeguard core societal values. Obi highlighted the critical role of an impartial judiciary in preserving the rule of law, which is fundamental to democracy and individual rights. He cautioned that when the judiciary’s fairness and transparency are in doubt, it threatens the rule of law and trust in democracy. #OMAGIST@AFRICAWORLDNEWS*
