The Association of Judges in Tunisia have called on all courts across the country to suspend work from Wednesday, in protest of President Kaïs Saïed’s dissolution of the Supreme Judicial Council.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook, the association also called for a Thursday protest in front of the council building, which closed down following President Saïed’s directive.
Ambassadors from G7 group of nations in Tunisia are deeply concerned, saying the president’s move undermines the autonomy of the judiciary, which is an integral component of democracy.
Meanwhile, President Saïed’s supporters have welcomed the move, saying it will help cleanse the country from corruption.
