Police authorities in Malawi’s Dedza, Lizulu area, retrieved a 1.7yr old baby girl from a toilet after the mother dropped it there to die on Thursday.
Police Unit Officer-in- charge, Charles Kalima confirmed the incident saying the baby had since been rushed to Dedza Hospital.
“The baby was brought to the hospital in a critical condition, with bruises all over her body, malnourished, weighing 4.2 kg. She couldn’t speak, walk or crawl,” said Dedza District Hospital in – charge for the maternity ward, Goodwin Mwanjera.
The baby remains in hospital receiving treatment, and family relations have refused to visit the facility following its mother’s arrest.
“The baby needs a home since the hospital is not a conducive environment for raising a child,” added Mwanjera.
