At the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice-presidential pick, delivered a primetime speech promising to fight for working-class Americans neglected by Democrats.
Highlighting his Midwest roots, Vance criticized career politicians and positioned Trump as America’s “last best hope.” Vance, previously a critic of Trump, has since reconciled with him and secured a Senate seat in 2022. The Ohio senator, known for his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” spoke of his challenging upbringing and accused America’s ruling class of damaging communities like his own.
Vance’s speech included personal anecdotes, such as his mother’s recovery from addiction, and a call for national unity following an assassination attempt on Trump. He emphasized America’s need to welcome immigrants on its own terms and pledged strong national defense. The convention’s climax will be Trump’s address, following news of Biden’s Covid-19 diagnosis, which temporarily suspended his campaign activities.
