Chad has abruptly sealed its border with Nigeria, citing fears of possible terrorist infiltration and growing tension over reports of United States military activity in West Africa.

Military sources in N’Djamena confirmed that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno ordered the closure following intelligence reports suggesting that armed groups from northern Nigeria were planning to slip into Chadian territory.

Troops and armored vehicles have since been deployed along key crossing points, with all security units on full alert.

President Déby, in a firm directive, stated that “no armed group or foreign force will be allowed to enter Chadian soil under any disguise,” emphasizing that national security remains non-negotiable.

The move comes amid widespread speculation of increased US military presence in parts of the Sahel region, following Washington’s renewed interest in countering terrorism and instability in Africa.

The Sahel, a stretch of land bordering the Sahara Desert, has long been plagued by insurgent violence, with Nigeria, Niger, and Chad among the hardest hit.

In recent months, clashes between militant groups in northern Nigeria and security forces have intensified, prompting fears that the chaos could spill across borders.

Analysts say Chad’s latest decision reflects growing anxiety among regional governments wary of being drawn into new conflicts or foreign military operations.

Security experts describe the action as a preventive measure aimed at reinforcing border control and averting any potential infiltration by extremist groups who may take advantage of ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

Observers warn that while the border closure may strengthen Chad’s internal security, it could also disrupt trade and movement between the two nations—further straining an already fragile regional economy.
