UK Issues Fresh Nigeria Travel Alert, Restricts Visits to 21 Areas
The United Kingdom has updated its travel advice for Nigeria, warning British nationals against all travel to six states and specified riverine areas in five other states.

The fresh advisory was issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The states placed under the strongest warning are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara.
The FCDO also advised against all travel to riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
According to the UK government, the affected riverine locations are areas made up of rivers and swamps that can be accessed by boat but not by road.
The UK further advised its citizens to undertake only essential travel to 15 other states and the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.
The affected states include Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara, Benue, Abia, Anambra and Imo.
Non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states are also covered by the “all but essential travel” warning.
The FCDO urged British nationals planning to visit Nigeria to research their destinations and remain aware of the security situation.
It also advised travellers to obtain suitable travel insurance covering their complete itinerary, planned activities and possible emergency expenses.
The UK government warned that insurance coverage could be affected if travellers visit locations against FCDO advice.
The updated travel guidance also contains information on Nigeria’s entry requirements, security risks, health concerns and access to assistance.

It further carries warnings about IVF and fertility treatment scams and overseas adoption.
