KENYA: Teachers probed over inhuman truancy punishment

Police authorities in Kenya have instituted an investigation into a case where three pupils were tied to a tree as punishment for absconding classes.

Two senior teachers of Thiru Primary School in Laikipia County were questioned by police on Thursday about the incident which has caused public outcry.

According to a report by NTV, affected pupils are aged between seven and 11.

A government official, Moses Muroki, disclosed that the incident happened last month, on August 20.

Mr. Muroki explained that the pupils were being punished for “truancy and delinquency”.

Head of children services for Laikipia county, Ezekiel Mwanza, told journalists that teachers responsible apologized to the young learners, adding that the action was “unfortunate that our children could be subjected to such inhumane treatment”.
