UNIZIK Sex Scandal Takes New Turn as Panel Uncovers Fresh Details
The controversy surrounding a UNIZIK professor and a female student has taken a fresh turn following preliminary findings by an investigative panel.
Professor Ifeanyi Sunny Odinye, a lecturer in Chinese Studies, has been suspended for three months with half salary.
The university approved the sanction after the six-member panel submitted its preliminary report to Vice-Chancellor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie.
The controversy began after a viral video showed suspected students stripping Odinye during an incident involving a female student.
The lecturer had reportedly caught the student with a phone during an examination before the confrontation occurred.
The panel found that Odinye failed to properly report the alleged examination malpractice involving the student.
He was also faulted for returning the recovered phone to the student on the same day.
The university said the lecturer’s actions violated provisions of its General and Academic Regulations.
However, the panel has not concluded its investigation into the allegation of sexual harassment against Odinye.
The university has extended the panel’s assignment by two weeks to establish what happened between the lecturer and student.
Investigators will also determine the identities of those who allegedly assaulted Odinye during the incident.
Another issue before the panel is whether kidnapping occurred during the controversial episode.
The student, Chikamso Favour Okechukwu, has meanwhile been referred to the Students’ Examination Misconduct Committee.
The panel is expected to submit its final findings and recommendations after completing the remaining aspects of its investigation.
The university said the final outcome could determine whether further disciplinary measures or criminal prosecution would follow.
Management also reaffirmed its commitment to fair hearing, transparency and zero tolerance for unethical conduct.
